JEAN-PAUL LESPAGNARD x EXTRA-ORDINAIRE / JACQUARD CUSHIONS

Object / Design & production

These jacquard cushions begin as images, then settle into space as textured presences, carrying both precision and material depth.

I approached these jacquard cushions as an extension of my visual language. Almost like anchored fragments, holding presence within a space. They originate from a collaboration in the Netherlands with a technician who diverted a machine from its initial purpose. Originally built to produce narrow woven labels, it was reconfigured to generate much wider textiles while maintaining an exceptional level of precision. This transformation opened a new field of possibilities. It allowed me to work with highly detailed compositions and translate them directly into weaving. The image is built within the fabric itself, thread by thread. Through jacquard weaving, the image gains another dimension. It becomes tactile and structured. From afar, it reads as a clear presence. As you get closer, the complexity of the weave and the density of the composition emerge. The collection is developed in two formats. A 50 x 50 cm version that integrates easily into everyday use. And a 100 x 100 cm version that shifts scale and creates a stronger spatial impact. These cushions exist as function and image. They can be used, but they also hold their own as compositions. Their perception changes depending on distance, light, and interaction.
